Nightstop MK
The Volunteer Centre, Milton Keynes has been supporting not for profit groups in Milton Keynes since 1976. We provide an essential service to these organisations in the recruitment of volunteers. This week we are focusing on one particular organisation - Nightstop, MK. They are currently looking for Volunteer Nightstop Hosts who can provide a young homeless person a room in their own home, breakfast and an evening meal and the opportunity to bathe & wash. Milton Keynes Council have set up the Nightstop Host scheme whose aim is to provide supportive accommodation in a homely environment for homeless young people, who are 16 and 17 years old until their housing situation is resolved. The young person will be placed with a host for 1 - 28 days whilst mediation takes place between the young person and their family to assess whether they are able to return to live in the family home. There are many reasons why a young person may be unable to live at home with their family these include: Relationship breakdown with parents Bereavement of parent(s) Parents in prison Risk of harm at home Young person displays challenging behaviour Family homelessness Parents have mental health issues Parents drug and/or alcohol abuse Whilst the young person is living with a host they will have someone to support them. Milton Keynes Council staff will help with any problems and make sure that the young person is happy, safe and that their needs are fully met. All the young people will be encouraged to be in education, training or employment. Volunteer Nightstop Hosts will have round the clock access to staff in the event of an emergency involving the young person and receive training. Staff will also assist hosts to devise a fair house rule when a young person is placed with them. It is particularly important that potential hosts are checked carefully for their suitability to carry out this role. Obviously a criminal record check will be carried out on all household members over the age of 18. However vetting is not just about criminal records it also involves interviews, home visits, medical checks and references. Although this process may seem lengthy it is essential that these checks are carried out in order to: Protect a client group who are vulnerable Protect Nightstop, MK staff and hosts Deter people who might wish to take advantage of vulnerable young people Details of two referees should be provided, one from someone familiar with the host's household and the other from an employer, or similar. For couple households, three references are required, one for each person and one for the household. To register your details for the above role contact us on 01908 662744 or at enquiries@volunteermk.org.uk For more information and advice about other voluntary roles come along to one of the following drop-in sessions or ring us on the number above to arrange an advice session.
