His writing career spanned over fifty years and he produced 29 original stage plays, 27 screenplays, many dramatic sketches, radio and television plays, poetry, one novel, short fiction, essays, speeches and letters. He also directed 50 stage, television and film productions and acted extensively in radio, stage, television and film productions of his own and others’ work. Pinter’s dramas are often thematically ambiguous, but they all involve complex issues of social identity; people who are alone in a bleak urban society. Despite the darkness there is much in Pinter that is comedic and wistful.
